Nestled within Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley, Lehigh University has stood as a distinguished and forward-thinking academic and research institution since its founding in 1865. With more than 100 degree programs and majors, a student:faculty ratio of 9:1, and a 1,600 acre campus that ranks among the most spectacular in the country, Lehigh University absolutely lives up to its claim of “A Beautiful Setting for Boundless Possibilities.”
Like most higher education institutions in the current environment, Lehigh relies heavily on its website to engage and recruit new students to their five undergraduate colleges: the College Arts and Sciences; the College of Business; the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science; the College of Education; and the College of Health.
Promet’s engagement with Lehigh University was guided by an approach that characterizes much of what the university is known for: questioning assumptions, digging deep, and backing up decisions with research.
Aligned with this data-driven focus, Promet Source helped Lehigh analyze demographic data along with the expectations of their various website users for purposes of determining the website navigation and navigation menus that fit with the expectations of prospective undergraduate students. Promet then developed and executed three distinct website usability studies, which included in-depth, one-on-one interviews with prospective undergraduate students.
The research uncovered a depth of insights concerning preferences and needs from Lehigh’s target user group, as well as a greater understanding for what prospective undergraduates are looking for when they visit a university website at various points in their search process.
Following the usability tests, Promet prepared a comprehensive report and proposed new detailed wireframes based on the results of the entire research initiative. The report synthesized the research findings, and presented stakeholders with an overview of results, along with key recommendations to improve the experience of the site.
