Chicago Public Schools ALO
An Additional Learning Opportunity program of Chicago Public Schools

Launched in 2010, Additional Learning Opportunities (ALO) is a pilot program focused on accelerating student achievement by increasing the amount of time students spend on learning activities.  The district believes, and research shows, that achievement increases when students spend more time on high-quality learning tasks.

The ALO program adds 90 minutes of additional learning time in math and reading to the end of each school day at participating schools.  Each year, this amounts to an extra 255 hours for students, or a 25% increase in annual school hours.  Over an entire K-12 career, students will receive an equivalent of 4 additional years of school.

Each ALO school partners with a community partner to support the program.  These community partners have deep experience with the communities and schools they serve and assist schools in recruiting, on-boarding, and managing the group of facilitators that monitor students as they interact with the online math and reading curriculum.  Facilitators may be parents, college students, community members, and/or teachers.
