Drupal: The Perfect CMS?

There are many reasons that Drupal is the perfect platform for startups. There might be endless reasons. Drupal truly offers a perfect environment for a new startup to start with and eventually scale with as the company grows. Because Drupal is open source, the opportunities that are possible are only limited by the imagination of the developer.

Navigation is a key strength in Drupal. Even as a complete novice, you will be able to understand the dashboard at a functional level within a few hours. There is no need to spend days or weeks becoming accustomed to or tweaking the dashboard like you would with some other content management systems. As you become more used to working in the Drupal environment, you will see how expansive the platform can be. You could probably build a fully functional social network with the Drupal CMS is you really had the drive. For most users, the dashboard navigation in Drupal is much quicker than other...

Let Your Mobile Site Be Found on the Web

/ 3:28pmGMT

Google's Gone Mobile

Earlier last month, Google had announced that they have added a smart phone user agent to their existing feature phone user agent. This means that the Googlebot-Mobile is now crawling mobile sites regularly.

According to Google, “This is to increase our coverage of smart phone content and to provide a better search experience for smart phone users.”  We think that this means that the crawler will be able to identify sites specifically optimized for mobile devices and redirect users where applicable.

If you’re a website owner or webmaster, you are probably wondering how a change such as this may affect you going forward. Chances are good that you get a huge percentage of your traffic from Google’s search results. You may have some top ranking keywords that could be affected. You may be wondering how you can use this new update to your advantage. Here is the link to the announcement so that you can read...

Which CMS Is The Best?

/ 6:43pmGMT

Drupal Vs. Wordpress

As a follow up to our previous blog post where we compared Drupal to Joomla, we have decided to pit Drupal against Wordpress.  This is truly the major battle of the open source content management systems.  Although these two platforms are incredibly popular and both are used to create and manage thousands of websites around the world they are still quite different from each other and should be used in different scenarios.

Both of these CMS' rely heavily on PHP and are licensed by the free GNU General Public License.  Both must use a SQL database in order to manage and keep track of the content that is uploaded.  Drupal had a much slower start than Wordpress, but as of recently has been picking up great speed.

Installation

Both CMS' are relatively simple to install.  Just...

How to Use Loadstorm to Run a Load Test on Your Site

/ 1:05pmGMT

Loadstorm is a Drupal based load testing tool. You can use it to purchase Amazon instances on some servers to perform your test cases. Traditionally, you should do some performance testing prior to launching a Drupal website. Recently, we have needed to push the testing a little bit further.

Loadstorm is a tool for load and performance testing that uses Amazon Web Services in order to achieve huge amounts of scalability. It is a web based platform which allows either testers or developers to send huge volumes of virtual user HTTP traffic to a specific server app. Loadstorm functions solely as a load testing application. It purposely does not include a lot of bells and whistles so that load testing can be as cost effective as possible for those developers on a tight budget.

Most developers who focus on web applications do not need all the complex tools that are built into software suites. The licensing fees for these tools are sky high and aren’t worth the price...

Keeping Your Drupal Site and Users Protected

/ 10:37amGMT

Securing Your Website

What is security? Well, a good definition of security is protecting things of value from harm’s way. When applying that definition to a website, one may contemplate whether or not any site is really secure. The fact of the matter is that there can and will never be zero risk online. The key is to minimize risk as much as possible.

As an owner of a website that runs the Drupal content management system, there are several tips that you can follow which will help you minimize the security risk for both you and your visitors. Always think in the long term, and remember that information security is everyone’s responsibility.

The first place to start minimizing your security risk is at your local workstation. Your personal machine is, and should be, everything to you. It needs to be protected. Always keep this computer up to date with the newest updates or patches. Using automatic updates is perfect for this. A solid...

Promet Source recently finished a long overdue update for Packworld.com

/ 9:37amGMT

Packaging World's Reconstruction

Promet Source recently finished upgrading Packaging World's website in order to make it more user friendly and visually appealing.  This was no small feat as the website was already loaded with content, and had a pretty cluttered sidebar navigation.  Promet's main focus with this project was to spruce up the site as whole while not losing any of the content that already existed, and still provide a clear indication to the site's audience on how to navigate the site with its newer simpler navigation.
The entire website is now tablet and mobile friendly, so it will reformat on the fly and fit the screen size of whatever device you might access it with.

Below is the entire article originally posted on www.packworld.com

Packaging World Magazine has relaunched its Web site, Packworld.com, with several new features and capabilities:
